Jack's Backyard Raises the Roof for Turner House

Kathy Jack and the crew at Jack's Backyard are throwing a benefit party to raise funds for Phase II of the Turner House roof repairs. It's going to be a great way to kick off the summer with live music by numerous bands, food and drink specials and a raffle. The suggested donation is $10, which is a bargain for live music and a good cause.

Details on the musical line-up will be posted shortly.

If you haven't already been to Jack's, this is a great way to check it out. It's one of the coolest spots in the Cliff, located at:

A View From Modern Architecture

Presented by Kevin Sloan

Contemporary architecture is rapidly becoming the kind of cultural force that seems capable of remaking a city's image in the marketplace, as well as its livability. How does one understand this kind of "modern" architecture and the kind of unfamiliar forms taking shape at the nearly complete Dallas Center for Performing Arts and Kessler Woods? What were the objectives of the modern architectural movement in the early twentieth century and are they being realized in these new works?

The talk will explore these questions by centering on a case study of two seminal buildings of the early twentieth century - Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House in Chicago and the Villa Savoye by LeCorbusier near Paris. Closer to home, the discussion will also share how the historic buildings of Oak Cliff are in fact products of the modern era. Answers and dialogue will hopefully give the attendee a "new set of eyes." The evening will conclude with a special message regarding the role of architecture in everyday life.

Mr. Sloan is a Winnetka Heights resident and a visiting professor at the UT Arlington School of Architecture. The projects of his professional practice, Kevin Sloan Studio, include works in landscape architecture, urban planning and design.

Impressions of Texas

Turner House

This year's theme was Impressions of Texas, curated by Michael R. Grauer, Curator of Art, Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, with assistance from TACO member Konrad Shields. The exhibition focused on the Texas brand of Impressionism which began to spread across the globe in the 1870s and reached its peak between about 1890 and 1920. Mr. Grauer presented a gallery lecture discussing the development of Texas Impressionism in the larger context of American and world Impressionism, considering what does or does not make a painting "Impressionist". Included in the exhibition were works by Frank Reaugh, E. G. Eisenlohr, Julian Onderdonk, Ella K. Mewhinney, L. O. Griffith, Franz Strahalm, and Jose Arpa. Patrons at the event enjoyed live jazz, a variety of fine wines, and heavy hors d'oeuvres.

Impressions of Texas was a wonderful and unique event. The OCFSFA board of directors wishes to express our appreciation to everyone who helped to make it such a success. Our sponsors, donors, volunteers, and attendees all came together to create an extraordinary cultural event and to further our mission of restoring Turner House, enriching our Community and supporting the Arts. Thank you one and all.
