November Salon - The Forgotten Nine and Other Women Artists Who Painted Early Texas

  • Turner House 401 North Rosemont Avenue Dallas, TX, 75208 United States (map)

“Magnolia” by Florence McClung is one of the pieces from private collections that will be on display during the event.

While the Dallas Nine artists made headlines in the 1930s, these men weren’t the only ones creating groundbreaking works of art in Texas. Women artists were making their own mark in the Lone Star State starting in the mid-nineteenth century and continuing to this day. Some of the artists active in the early to mid-20th century include Coreen Spellman, Dorothy “Toni” LaSelle, Grace Spaulding John, Florence McClung, Kathleen Blackshear, and Clara McDonald Williamson. Working in a wide variety of styles from Impressionism to Regionalism to Modernism to Folk Art, these artists created striking works that portray and interpret Texas’s unique history, heritage, and beauty. The recently published book, Making the Unknown Known, tells the story of these amazing women and includes images of their most noteworthy works. In this presentation, you’ll hear about these artists directly from the authors, Drs. Victoria and Light Cummins. As a special bonus there will be an exhibit of rarely seen paintings by Texas women artists selected from private collections.

This event is sponsored by the Center for the Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art (CASETA), Scott Chase and Debra Witter, and the Texas Art Collectors Organization (TACO).

Doors open at 3 p.m., with programming starting at 3:30. Refreshments will be provided.
